St Pancras Basin
Heavy oak gates groan to their widest pass, allowing exit from the damp brick canyon of the lock. Two steel shells sit shoulder to scraped shoulder. Engines murmur, a low, nervous pulse, they both begin to inch. At the sterns, knuckles go white around polished brass tillers. Eyes dart from port to starboard, starboard to port, frantically measuring the millimetres between black hulls.
